Guide keys have been used for over 100 years to help locksmiths code cut keys without an expensive machine. We even have many of the newer cars, such as the GM Z keyway, Toyota 10 cut keys, and more! Kwikset, Schlage, padlocks, mailbox and many other guide keys available.
The concept of guide keys is simple. Have one key cut with the same depth all the way across. So you have one key for each depth of the key. Simply choose the depth key you need, and cut the correct depth in the position of the cut. So if you have a code of 33243, you'd use the #3 guide key, and cut spaces 1, 2, and 5 with the this key. Then switch to #2 guide key to cut the 2nd position, and #4 guide key to cut the 4th space. You may have to use a file to angle between the cuts to make sure that there are no steep angles on the finished key.
